  February 14th, also known as Valentine's Day, is a holiday celebrated around the world to recognize and express love and affection between romantic partners. The holiday has its roots in ancient Rome, where a festival called Lupercalia was held in mid-February to celebrate fertility and the coming of spring.   The origin of Valentine's Day is somewhat unclear and there are several different stories and legends associated with the holiday. One popular theory is that it originated as a Christian holiday honoring Saint Valentine, a third-century Roman saint who was imprisoned and executed for secretly marrying couples in love during a time when such marriages were banned by the Roman Empire.   In the 5th century AD, the Roman Empire became Christianized, and the church sought to replace pagan celebrations with Christian holidays.
